We receive a lot of questions about our shutters; mostly “why are shutters better than blinds?”. Shutters are a great feature for your windows for a few good reasons! This article aims to answer some of the questions we receive regularly. As always you can give us a call to ask any questions or arrange your free quote – we’re always happy to have a look and let you see some examples / photos of windows like yours with different shutter styles.
Most of our work is completed around Worcester and Worcestershire, so you may see some photos on our social media that feature homes very similar to yours, which is a great way to research what your shutters will look like when they’re fitted!
Are shutters soundproof?
Shutters are not soundproof, but will dampen sounds. This is for two reasons; they physically block the sound from escaping as they cover the whole window (when closed), and because they are made from heavy materials such as wood or plastic that don’t allow sound to travel through easily.
Many of our customers find that their shutters make living next to busy roads and walkways much more pleasant, partially due to the sound blocking properties and partly due to the increased level of privacy shutters offer. If you’re looking for sound blocking shutters or noise reduction from traffic, full height wooden shutters are usually your best option.
Are shutters black out?
Shutters are not black out, but do block a significant amount of light when fully closed. Depending on how dark you need your sleeping space and how bright outside lights are, shutters are usually a good choice especially when paired with some curtains!
Some styles are better for blackout shutters than others, for example full height shutters are excellent as they cover the whole window. We do also make solid shaker shutters, which are more like wooden doors that block out a lot more light than other styles, as there are no slats at all. These are significantly less common and mostly fitted on cupboards or to block out living spaces rather than over windows.
Are shutters good for old windows?
Shutters are great for older windows. They reduce draughts, and are made to measure so tricky old properties are no issue. Certain styles of shutters suit the period style of older homes, particularly cafe shutters which have always been a popular choice for Edwardian and Victorian home owners.
Sash windows can cause issues with some window coverings like blinds, but with shutters there are some great options that feature your beautiful windows rather than hide them away. Split level (Tier-on-Tier) shutters are a great option, as are Cafe shutters.
Are shutters good for draughty windows?
Shutters will reduce draughts due to being a physical blocker in front of your windows. While they’re not ‘draught-proof’, they are made to fit snug inside your window recess and when closed, there is very little space for draughts to escape from.
Customers who suffer from draughts have reported a noticeable difference after having their shutters fitted – and we do visit a high number of older homes with older windows! Paired with some heavy curtains, they’re a great option, and certainly much better than just the curtains or blinds which offer much less protection on their own.
