Are shutters better than blinds?

The choice between shutters and blinds really depends on what you’re looking for in terms of style, functionality, and maintenance.

Here’s a breakdown of each:

Energy Efficiency

Shutters:

Shutters can help with insulating your windows, blocking out hot sun and draughts from single glazing. They’re often made from wood or PVC, which creates a physical barrier between your window and the inside of your home. They’re great for energy efficiency.

Blinds:

Blinds can offer an increase in energy efficiency if they are made from a thicker, more durable material such as wood. They are usually fitted with a small margin between the blind and the wall, meaning draughts can escape though.

Overall, shutters are better for energy efficiency.

Light Control

Shutters:

Shutters are made of solid materials (like wood or composite) and are built to last. They often require less maintenance than blinds and tend to hold up well over time.

Blinds:

Blinds can be adjusted to control light, but they don’t generally block light as effectively as shutters because of gaps in the slats.

Shutters come ahead in this category too, with better light control overall.

Cost

Shutters:

Shutters tend to be more expensive upfront, especially custom-made ones. Although they tend to last longer than blinds due to being more from more durable materials, they do have a significant initial cost. You can read more about how much shutters cost here.

Blinds:

Blinds are initially much less expensive than shutters, and can be an excellent option if you’re on a lower budget.

When looking at cost, blinds are a much cheaper option. In this category, they come out on top.

Aesthetic

Shutters:

Shutters tend to offer a more classic, elegant, and permanent look. They can add value to your home and give it a more traditional or luxurious feel. They come in many colours and finishes; black and grey are both very popular!

Blinds:

Blinds offer a modern and casual look. They are available in many different materials, including wood, faux wood, aluminium, and fabric, giving you a wide range of choices.

Both shutters and blinds are great for aesthetic reasons, there is no clear winner in this category.
