Indoor Shutters: Trends in 2023

2023 has been a year of big changes again in the UK – a continued rise in working from home, huge energy bills, and a cost of living crisis have impacted the way we choose our home furnishings and hardware. We’ve noticed an increase in shutter installations for cost-saving reasons, with many customers interested in saving energy and picking a window covering that will stand the test of time. Of course, they look fantastic too, but the real benefits of indoor shutters for your windows are much more than that.

Indoor shutters for windows have always been a great way to conserve heat inside the home, and shutters have been used for this purpose for hundreds of years. In the last few years they’ve really come back into fashion for their traditional, classy, clean look in both modern and period properties – we do just as many installations in new builds as we do in traditional homes! Out of the many customers we’ve visited in 2023, we’ve noticed some interesting trends.

Trend 1: Dark grey or black indoor shutters

Black and dark grey are taking the UK by storm – woodwork, window cills, stairs and windows are turning dark in favour of the recently trendy bright gloss white. With that, we’ve seen a huge rise in customers who want shutters to match – dark, anthracite grey and black are in fashion. Most popular in our full shutters, particularly in kitchen or bathroom areas, for a dramatic and eye-catching look.

Trend 2: Full shutters for bay windows

Indoor shutters for bay windows have always been a best-seller for us, since having something made to measure your windows is guaranteed to ensure they look great. This year, though, we’ve noticed a rise in customers replacing blinds with our shutters for energy-saving reasons, and to keep up with trends in home fashion. Bay windows are notoriously difficult to dress, with odd angles for curtain rails and blinds that might not fit well. As well as being made to measure and fitted by experts who’ve complete hundreds (maybe even thousands!) of bay window shutter installations, our shutters are great at saving you energy on heating your home (or cooling it in the summer) and they’re great for achieving an almost blackout level of dark too.

Trend 3: Maximalist design

Compared to 2020 – 2022, when minimalist design and sleek grey everything was the look of choice, 2023 has done a complete shift into maximalist features, colours and designs. All of those wonderful period features, bold colours and prints have come back into fashion with shutters for windows included. We love to see all of your amazing homes decorated in your own style – and our shutters always look incredible against a strong coloured wall or behind some boldly printed open curtains.

Whatever your reasons for wanting indoor shutters, we’re confident that we can make your windows stand out. You can contact us to chat about your options, or book your free home survey by getting in touch below.
